Frequently asked questions
-
Our services are free to access but are not free to provide. It costs approximately £2m to run our services across all four centres per year. Our survival relies completely on donation, fundraising and gifts in Wills.
-
If you’re unable to attend, please let us know as soon as possible and at least 2 working days in advance, so we can offer the slot to another patient. Appointments cancelled with less than 48 hours notice will still be charged to CancerCare.
Missed appointments cost the charity around £50,000 each year, so giving advance notice really helps us support everyone who needs our services.
To cancel or rearrange your appointment, please call 01524 381820.

The number of sessions you are offered will be based on your individual needs. Sessions are reviewed after the first six weeks to ensure the support continues to be appropriate and beneficial.

Yes. In many cases, you will be able to access CancerCare services. However, as CancerCare is not a primary mental health service, we would not usually offer counselling if you were currently receiving psychological therapy elsewhere.
Our role is to provide specialist emotional support related to cancer, bereavement and life‑shortening illness. If we feel another service would be better placed to meet your needs, we will work with you to signpost you to the most appropriate support available.
-

-
Yes. We support people affected by cancer and other life‑shortening conditions, including multiple sclerosis and motor neurone disease. If you’re unsure, please get in touch to discuss your needs.
-
Yes. You are welcome to bring a friend or partner to your initial appointment. They may also accompany you to future visits and wait in our lounge during your session. Our reception team will ensure they are made comfortable while they wait.
-
Yes. If you are experiencing difficulty travelling to our centre for your appointment, our Volunteer Driver service may be able to provide transport to and from your session. Please note that this is a limited service and availability may vary.
Donations are welcomed for each journey to help cover the costs of providing this service. For further information or to discuss your needs, please speak with a member of our Therapy Coordination Team or your therapist.

We aim to support as many people as possible; however, there may be times when CancerCare is not the most appropriate service for your needs. If this is the case, we will work with you to signpost you to a more suitable service.
