A celebration of remembrance in the beautiful gardens at our Slynedales Centre

Join us to remember and celebrate the lives of loved ones lost.

The gardens at Slynedales have long been a source of tranquillity and comfort to the people who come to us for support. Many say being surrounded by nature is an important part of their therapy.

For this special event, we will be adorning the trees, flower beds and paths with hundreds of lights and invite you to dedicate a candle which will bear your unique, personal message.

The candle will be added to the lawn to create a centrepiece display of commemoration, which will set the garden aglow.

The evening will feature special areas of reflection and contemplative live music throughout.

By sponsoring a candle, you will be helping us to provide vital support to people in our local community facing cancer or bereavement.

If you would like to dedicate a candle, but cannot attend in person, we will be able to add your dedication and place your candle for you.

There will also be a team of qualified CancerCare therapists in attendance on the night, should you feel the need to talk to someone.

You will also receive a special keepsake postcard in return for your dedication.

Plans for the Evening

On the night
You’ve told us that you’re planning to join us at the event and add your own dedication to your candle. Our volunteers will be on hand to help you prepare your dedicated light, but please arrive between 6.30pm – 7.00pm so that you have enough time to add your personal message before the candles are placed.

During the evening, you (or a member of your party) will be invited to add your candle to the display. There will be time for quiet, collective, reflection around the display before the event ends just before 8.30pm.

Directions & Parking

Lights on the Lawn will take place at CancerCare, Slynedales, Slyne Road, Lancaster, LA2 6ST, but we ask, if you're able, that you park at Beaumont College, Slyne Road, Lancaster LA2 6AP, which is a short walk from Slynedales. There will be no charge for parking. There is limited parking at CancerCare, which will be reserved for those who have a disability. If you require a disabled parking bay, please contact us in advance by calling 01524 381820.

Slynedales can also be reached by bus, on the route of both the 55 and 555 buses.

Spectator area & Accessibility

Please note that this is an outdoor event. You will be able to view the display from the paths & paved areas in the garden. We recommend that you wear sensible footwear, as in some areas the ground may be uneven or slippy.

There is disabled access to the outdoor viewing areas, although some slopes are steep. There is also a disabled toilet at the venue. If you require disabled access or would like us reserve a disabled parking bay for you, please call us before Friday on 01524 381820.

Refreshments

The Slynedales centre will be open with tea, coffee, hot chocolate & homemade cake available to buy. All proceeds to CancerCare.

In case of bad weather

The candles used at Lights on the Lawn are battery-powered as these are most likely to stay lit all evening, even with light breezes or rain showers, so the event would only be postponed in the case of extreme weather. We want this to be a special occasion with an opportunity for reflection, and if the weather doesn’t allow this, we will attempt to hold the event on another day. If we do have to postpone the event, we will communicate this on our Facebook page and by email.
