Counselling is by far the most popular form of therapy provided by CancerCare and last year it accounted for more than half of all therapy sessions delivered by the charity.

We are always looking to add to our team with talented new therapists and we were recently joined by experienced counsellor Mark Browne who began seeing clients at our Kendal Centre early this month.

Mark has been a counsellor for around 30 years and has combined his career with a variety of other jobs ranging from stained glass window restoration to cooking in a country house hotel.

However, his passion for helping people in often desperate situations has remained a constant in his life and has seen him work as a specialist teaching assistant with autistic children and with people at risk of self harm.

Mark said: “For me it is incredibly satisfying being able to help people make a really big change in their life whether that is recovering from a trauma or moving on towards a better life for themselves. The feeling of privilege of being allowed into the deepest parts of someone’s life is quite profound.

“Counselling can be very beneficial for people coping with difficult experiences as the natural instinct of family and friends is to try and ‘fix’ the situation and make it better. For me, counselling can help the client integrate their sense of hopelessness and despair into their story, help them make sense of it and make peace with where they are.”
