In February 2022 we stepped foot onto the soil of our new allotment in Lancaster and embarked on an exciting project to transform an overgrown patch into a productive plot for gardening and growing.

Gardening is a healthy and relaxing pastime and we have been using the allotment as a therapeutic space for our clients, staff, and volunteers to ease their anxieties in the fresh air.

“There is so much research about the benefits of having a connection with nature and the therapeutic properties of being outside in a green space, especially for cancer patients. I wanted to create this environment as an informal peer support group for people eligible to use our services to do some gardening and grow fruit and vegetables.” said Sarah Drake, CancerCare’s Development and Engagement Officer.

Months of hard work from volunteers, staff, and clients, has transformed the allotment to an array of youthfully fresh produce and created a sustainable space for people to enjoy.

“Growing is only a part of the idea, it’s about being amongst nature and the mindfulness of the surroundings: trees, fields, soil, the flowers, bees and butterflies. THRIVE allows relaxation and head space for anyone that needs it knowing you’re amongst people that understand,” said Sarah.

As it’s National Allotments Week, we want to take this opportunity to reflect on the progression of THRIVE and take a step back to appreciate how quickly we have transformed the patch.

Alec joined the allotment group this summer and has massively benefitted from being surrounded by a peaceful green space. “I’m currently undergoing treatment and due to the nature of it I’m unable to commit fully to the project however, over the last several weeks THRIVE has provided a welcomed distraction and has introduced me to some lovely people. I am certainly pleased I threw my cap into the ring,” said Alec.

Our team have created a space that can be used by clients and their families, and we would love to welcome more people. CancerCare would like to say a massive thank you to our team of volunteers for their hard work and dedication to this project, this could not have happened without you.
