CancerCare’s Morecambe Bay walks raise nearly £25k for CancerCare!

The Cross Bay Walk on Bank Holiday Sunday and Piel Island Walk on 4 September combined to raise an incredible amount of money for the charity.

Our annual Cross Bay Challenge was postponed last year due to the Covid pandemic but the guided walk, from Arnside to Grange-over-Sands, returned with a bang raising a fantastic £22,095 which will go directly to help support local people affected by cancer and bereavement.

This year’s walk saw around 500 people taking part and the final fundraising total was the largest ever achieved for the charity which has centres in Lancaster and Morecambe.

Organiser Kat Michaels said: “This year has been our biggest success to date and we are truly humbled by the generosity and kindness of our supporters.

“This money is vital and needed now more than ever to help local families and individuals now in our community affected by the impact of cancer or bereavement. I would also like to say a special thank you to the Guide Over the Sands Trust and Queen’s Guide to the Sands Michael Wilson for making this event possible not to mention all our wonderful volunteers who helped out to make it such a special day.”

Similarly the Piel Island Walk from Walney to the historic Island saw it’s best ever fundraising total with more than £2,800 in the collection bucket.

Organiser Heidi Bowron said: "It couldn't have been better. The weather was in our favour, the sands nice and dry, the scenery beautiful and with such a knowledgeable guides, John Murphy and Ben Pinder our 114 walkers enjoyed the day along with ourselves. We were delighted to have raised over £2,800 which will go a long way to support clients in our local community affected by the impact of cancer or bereavement."
