What is it?
At Cancer Care, we use evidence-based advice to help clients develop the best diet for them. We see clients who have recently been diagnosed with cancer as well as those who need support preparing for treatment. Some clients are currently going through treatment, or might be experiencing side effects during treatment, or post-treatment. Some are keen to have the best possible diet to reduce their risk of further illness.
Clients who have been impacted by a loved one’s cancer or life shortening illness diagnosis can struggle with eating, either practically or emotionally. We can help them to improve their diet to ensure their body gets everything it needs to be healthy and functional.
What does it involve?
While food is essentially a bunch of nutrients that are the building blocks of our body, it can hold trigger an emotional response, either positive or negative. Our life experiences can be a catalyst for food related behaviours, some of which are not beneficial to our health and need to be considered with care and compassion.
You will have up to eight sessions to discuss what goals you have, and what areas of your health and food are most important to you.
There is an opportunity to work on mutually-agreed plans, recipe and cooking ideas, and habit changes. There is also space for you discuss what food and eating means to you right now.
If you suffer with digestive issues including distressing or irritating bowel habits, you might want a bespoke diet that suits your own digestive system.
How it can help?
You will be set achievable goals to improve your eating habits and lifestyle which can have a number of benefits including:
- Increasing your energy levels
- Optimising your immune system
- Boosting mood and promoting feelings of wellbeing
- Optimising gut function
- Encouraging restful sleep
- Weight loss or gain
- Pain management
Sessions provide a space for clients to discuss their diet, while allowing a chance to explore what they might like to change, and what barriers they may currently have. Our Dieticians can provide access to the most up-to-date research to help you decide if changes are appropriate at a certain time. You will work together to make small, sustainable changes, that are easy to maintain and eventually become an easy part of life.
