When Karen Swift was seeking a charity to raise money for, CancerCare was her first choice. When her late father, Alan, was battling cancer, CancerCare supported him, and Karen’s brother, Philip, also accessed our services during his own cancer diagnosis.
Earlier this year, music teacher Karen took on the 50-mile London to Brighton Bike Ride in memory of Alan, raising over £350 (including Gift Aid) for CancerCare.
Alan was originally diagnosed with testicular cancer. He was cured, but a while later, the cancer returned.
“The cancer had spread all over, and it was now incurable,” said Karen. “Dad passed away aged 86 in January 2022. He had always spoken so fondly of CancerCare. He found the services so beneficial, but he was also involved in the charity in other ways. Dad really enjoyed being part of the CancerCare family – it meant a lot to him.”
Alan was a regular attendee at our Hug in a Mug support group and was a familiar and much-loved face around our Slynedales Centre. He was also a keen poetry writer and published poetry books which were sold in aid of CancerCare.
Philip also attended sessions at CancerCare during his diagnosis and treatment for testicular cancer.
“Very happily, Philip is still with us,” added Karen.
Karen first took on the London to Brighton ride in 2022, ahead of her 2025 attempt.
“I wanted to do something to give a smaller charity recognition; the services are so vital,” she said. “I’m a daily cyclist, but I still found it challenging. It was so nice to be around others doing the ride for their own charities. It was very emotional as I crossed the finish line.”
