Exactly 20 years ago, Jackie lost her beloved husband of 49 years. She was referred into CancerCare’s services for counselling and we have since been a steady hand for her to hold during incredibly dark times. Now Jackie has included a gift in her Will so that CancerCare can be there for others. Jackie tells her story below:

“I lost my dear husband, John, in 2005 after 49 years of very happy marriage. I was devastated and was unable to function properly, so deep was my grief. In spite of having a loving family around me, I was unable to see a future for myself.

“I was referred to CancerCare for grief counselling, something which became a lifeline to me. After my counselling sessions I joined in other activities which were on offer, such as aromatherapy and the art group.

“I looked forward to going to CancerCare’s Slynedales Centre. Everyone was so friendly and compassionate. I met others in similar circumstances to me and we were able to support each other.

“There was such an air of calm and it felt like a second home. After my allocated time was up I kept in touch, attending the monthly coffee mornings and eventually, with the help of my good friend, was able to run these mornings.

“I feel so blessed to have been part of the CancerCare family that I felt that I had to do something to help. I set up a monthly donation and have left a legacy in my Will.

“CancerCare has had staff changes over the past 20 years but the loving, caring atmosphere has remained and the welcome and warmth still prevail.

“I cannot adequately express what a difference CancerCare has made to my life. They were there during the darkest time and brought me back into the light.”

Around a quarter of our work supporting local people affected by cancer or bereavement is funded by wonderful people like you who choose to give a gift to CancerCare in their Will.

Of course, we understand that when making a Will, the needs of your family and loved ones will always come first. However, once you’ve looked after those closest to you, including a gift to CancerCare can help many more people.
