“There are many kinds of legacies which we can leave behind when we die. The greatest being the memories for whom those we have left behind will treasure.”

Maureen and John Calnan speak to us about the remarkable gift that their daughter, Alison, included in her Will for CancerCare.

“Our beloved daughter, Alison, fought cancer bravely. She was determined to make the most of her remaining life by discovering new activities and exploring new adventures.

“Alison attended CancerCare’s Slynedales Centre where she made new and loyal friends. She loved the jewellery making group, which providing her with a new activity, new friends and a set of new skills which she used to good purpose, making beautiful gifts for friends and family.

“As her parents we are so proud of her. She showed kindness and generosity during her life – always helping others - and that memory of her stayed strong as we distributed gifts from her estate to worthy charitable causes, one being CancerCare.”

Alison’s thoughtful gift will help to purchase new equipment for the jewellery group at Slynedales, the safe and supportive environment that Alison loved so much, where local people can meet others affected by cancer or loss. Her generous donation will also fund more than 2,500 hours of much-needed individual therapy support for adults and children across North Lancashire and South Cumbria affected by cancer, life-shortening illness or bereavement.

Anna Webster, CancerCare’s Legacy Officer, said: “Alison is very much missed by all her friends at CancerCare, but through her wonderful donation, her love and kindness are still felt.

“Her donation means that CancerCare can be there for others in our community who find themselves dealing with the impact of cancer, and our team of staff, therapists and volunteers can continue Alison’s legacy of helping those who need it.

“Thanks to Alison, those who turn to CancerCare for support will not have to face cancer or bereavement alone. We are so touched to receive her special gift and we are eternally grateful to Alison, as well as to her parents John and Maureen, for helping to fulfil Alison’s wishes.”

Around a quarter of CancerCare’s work supporting local people affected by cancer or bereavement is funded by Gifts in Wills. We are grateful for every gift in every Will, and whether you can give 1% or 100% of your estate, your gift will mean future generations across North Lancashire and South Cumbria will always be able to turn to CancerCare.
