What is it?

Reiki is a healing practice that involves channeling energy through the hands of a Reiki Practitioner to promote relaxation, stress reduction and overall well-being. The aim of a Reiki session is to create a calm, almost meditative experience for the patient.

What does it involve?

The session is held in a quiet room, perhaps with soft music, dim lighting or calming scents. You remain fully clothed and either lie down on a massage table or sit in a comfortable chair. The practitioner will place their hands on, or a few inches above, your body and work their way down from head to toe to encourage emotional and physical healing.

Common positions include the head, shoulders, stomach, knees and feet, but this can vary. The hands are usually still for several minutes at each spot, allowing “energy” to flow. Feelings may include warmth, tingling, gentle pulsing, coolness or relaxation. Some people report seeing colours, drifting into a meditative state, or even falling asleep. The only sensation may be one of calm, or a sense of lightness.

How can it help you?

If you are struggling with stress and anxiety, Reiki can help improve relaxation, ease tension and boost your overall wellbeing. It can also provide from relief from emotional tension, grief or overwhelm and can provide support for sleep problems.

Reiki may also help alleviate physical symptoms such as headaches, nausea and insomnia. It can help relieve pain and can support recovery after illness, surgery or injury.

After a Reiki session, you may also feel an increased connection to the self.
