In April we launched a 12 month campaign to promote better outcomes from early cancer detection. We are now looking for people who would like to support us to develop and deliver the campaign.

Over the next month we will be setting up a steering group of people with a diverse range of experience to co-produce the campaign, including people who have had cancer diagnosis, family members of cancer patients, nurses, doctors, and academics.

We aim to recruit and train up to 8 Community Advocates who have had experience of a cancer diagnosis themselves to conduct community-based conversations to enable us to collate the authentic experiences of getting a cancer diagnosis.

We will be consulting within our communities to understand the barriers people have experienced accessing testing and diagnosis. We will also be consulting within our communities to understand when interventions have been timely and successful.

One of the aims of this campaign is to break the taboos of talking about cancer and thinking of it as a death sentence.

Can you help?

We are now trying to find people who want to be involved in shaping or delivering this project.

If you’re interested in joining our steering group, the first meetings will be held at CancerCare’s Slynedales centre on Wednesday 26th June 10.00am-11.30am or Thursday 27th 6.00pm-7.30pm. You could also join via Zoom if you’re not able to attend in person.

You could sign up to be a Community Advocate and receive training to collect people’s experiences of getting a diagnosis. You could come forward to share your experience of receiving a diagnosis and how this impacted your treatment and prognosis.

To express your interest please send an email to Alison.Stainthorpe@cancercare.org.uk with the Subject ‘Steering Group’ and include the following information:

  • Full name:
  • Contact email:

  • How would you like to be involved (please choose from Become an advocate, Share experience(s), Healthcare professional, Other (please specify):
  • Which date would you like to attend:

We look forward to meeting you and bringing our skills and strengths together to create this important campaign.
