CancerCare’s THRIVE Allotment Project in Lancaster is looking for new people to join!

The THRIVE Allotment is a therapeutic, volunteer-led gardening project that supports people affected by cancer, life-shortening illness and bereavement.

It offers a peaceful space for relaxation, mindfulness and gentle physical activity, with plots maintained year-round by a small team of volunteers.

Spending time at the allotment - whether gardening, carrying out repairs or simply enjoying some quiet time - can provide an opportunity to focus on something other than a challenging or worrying situation.

The THRIVE team provides a supportive community space where you can meet new people and build meaningful friendships.

The allotment opening times are usually:

  • Wednesday 10am - 12noon
  • Sunday 10am - 12noon

However, once you have joined THRIVE, you may attend more regularly.

CancerCare’s Head of Client Services, Kayla Clough, said: “Tucked away in Lancaster, the allotment is a peaceful retreat. It is a purpose-designed space dedicated to supporting health and wellbeing. Evidence consistently shows that time spent outdoors and connected with nature can deliver significant physical and psychological benefits. These include reducing stress levels, improving blood pressure, alleviating anxiety, and enhancing overall mental health and emotional resilience. By providing a calm, natural environment, the allotment promotes relaxation, encourages positive lifestyle choices, and supports holistic wellbeing for all who use it.”

To join the allotment, please contact CancerCare’s Therapy Coordination Team at: tct@cancercare.org.uk. You do not need to undergo an assessment to join, but you must let the team know you would like to attend.
