Support for young people: Re-Fresh returns to Kendal and Barrow

Therapeutic peer support groups for children and young people affected by cancer and bereavement are launching in Kendal and Barrow this spring. CancerCare’s Re-Fresh peer support groups work with local young people aged five to 17 who are bereaved or have been affected by a cancer diagnosis.

The groups provide a space for young people to meet others their age who may be experiencing similar challenges, while encouraging regular mental health check-ins. A range of therapeutic peer support group activities helps to broaden horizons, develop interests and support the formation of new friendships.

CancerCare’s Lancaster Re-Fresh group has been running for several years, while our Morecambe-based group for children aged five to 11 was reinstated earlier this year. Young people can take part in Re-Fresh for up to a year.

Activities will include games, arts and crafts, drama and other fun challenges. The sessions are peer-led, meaning young people help choose the activities and projects they want to take part in. Therapeutic peer support group activities are crucial for young people as they provide a safe and supportive environment for emotional expression, connection and growth.

The Kendal Re-Fresh group will begin on 21st April, while Barrow’s sessions will start on 23rd April. CancerCare is now accepting referrals for both groups.

Re-Fresh peer support group taster sessions

Re-Fresh peer support taster sessions will take place in Kendal on 17th March from 5pm to 7pm at CancerCare’s Kendal Centre, and in Barrow on 19th March from 5pm to 7pm at St Mary’s Community Hub. There is no need to book for these sessions.

Emma Wareing, Youth Group Leader at CancerCare, said: “These groups provide young people with a safe space where they can have some distance from what may be going on at home. They can also meet others with shared experiences and take part in activities that promote wellbeing and emotional health.

“Young people enjoy Re-Fresh because they make new friends and meet a range of different people. They have fun and share laughs – things that can sometimes be missing if they are experiencing the impact of cancer or bereavement at home. Peer support can reduce isolation, raise self-esteem and promote recovery, and it has the potential to transform mental health.”
