New in-person support groups for people who have been bereaved are launching in Kendal this November.

CancerCare are holding a therapist-led bereavement group for adults at our Kendal Centre on Blackhall Road starting from Thursday 6th November. The sessions will run for eight weeks and will be led by two experienced counsellors.

Last year, we successfully trialled the first therapist-led bereavement group at our centre in Lancaster. The pilot study aided the development of a framework for the group to be rolled out into our Barrow and Kendal centres.

The group will provide participants with the opportunity to share their own stories while also hearing the experiences of other group members.

CancerCare Head of Client Services Kayla Clough said: “Having piloted the therapy-led bereavement group in Lancaster and Barrow, we are now rolling the next course out in Kendal.”

CancerCare Therapist Rachel Walker added: “Grief can be a lonely road. Being part of a therapist-led group provides clients with a safe space to talk through their emotions while feeling cared for and respected. It allows for connection, too, and we hope that clients may form friendships which support them once their group has finished. We hope that this group will be suitable for those people who might not feel that one-to-one counselling is for them, or they might have benefitted from another form of therapy and feel ready for a group setting for further support while going through a bereavement.”
