More than 130 people donned Christmas costumes for a special festive fun run in Millom.

On Sunday, CancerCare held its first ever Santa Dash in the town which saw dozens of families converge on the Millom Community Track for a morning of seasonal entertainment culminating in a one-mile jovial jog to raise money for the charity.

Among those taking part was Aysha Lloyd, her mum Debra and young children. Aysha raised more than £500 in sponsorship and was inspired to take part by Debra’s recent breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Keen runners Rebecca Thorpe and son Joseph have previously taken part in CancerCare’s Rampside Rush race. Rebecca said: “We like to do a bit of running and thought this would be a really fun thing to do just before Christmas and for a great cause.”

Local DJ Martin George added to the atmosphere playing some upbeat Christmas tunes and Millom-based fitness expert Natalie Dawson led a pre-race warm-up to ensure the assembled Santas were suitably stretched before the start.

The event raised nearly £2,500 and our Furness Community Fundraiser Heidi Bowron said: “We had an absolutely wonderful day. There was a real sense of community spirit and it was amazing to see so many people from the town come out to support our first ever event in Millom. It certainly won’t be our last.

“We help many people from Millom at our centre in Barrow and I am sure the event will help spread the word about what we do to enable us to reach even more people from the local area in need of the services we provide.”
