We were thrilled to be featured on the BBC recently!
Earlier this year, we were approached to take part in a segment about cancer support opportunities in the area for children and young people. The BBC team - headed up by journalist Erin Ivey - were keen to learn more about the vital support we provide to those affected by cancer.
The filming crew joined one of our Re-Fresh therapeutic peer support group sessions on Friday evening in February at our Slynedales Centre. The segment aired on the BBC News on 17th March, at lunchtime and in the evening.
Their spotlight interview was with Oliver, a young Re-Fresh client who has cancer and has greatly benefited from joining the group and meeting others going through similar experiences. They also spoke to our Youth Worker, Emma, who explained exactly how our young clients benefit from attending Re-Fresh.
Our incredible Re-Fresh clients were fantastic ambassadors, highlighting the meaningful work delivered by our youth team and therapists. We are so proud of how confidently and honestly they shared their experiences.
The Re-Fresh project works with local young people aged five to 17 who are bereaved or have been affected by a cancer diagnosis. These peer support groups provide a place for young people to meet others their age experiencing similar things while encouraging mental health check-ins. The range of activities aims to widen their horizons, develop their interests and help them forge new friendships.
We have sessions in Lancaster, Morecambe, Barrow and Kendal and CancerCare is currently taking referrals for the groups.
