Andrew Birchall ChairmanAndrew Birchall

Andrew first joined CancerCare's Trustee Board two years ago and became Chairman in October 2016.

Andrew's career has been in business where he has a commercially driven general management background and has served on the boards of a number of companies, both small and large. Having left big business a few years ago, Andrew set up a small business consultancy. Andrew lives in the Yorkshire Dales with his wife Lorna and they have three grown up children.

Tony Gatrell  Vice ChairmanTony Gatrell

Tony is a Professor of Geography at Lancaster University specialising in Medical Health Geography. He was also (founding) Dean of the Faculty of Health & Medicine until July 2014. He is married with two teenage daughters and three grown-up children and lives in Cockerham.

Fiona Weir Finance DirectorFiona Weir

Fiona is a qualified CIMA accountant with 25 years of experience gained in a healthcare business in Bolton. As Head of Business Planning, she worked with the senior management team to evaluate growth opportunities and develop strategic and financial plans. Having taken a career break, and relocated to the area with husband Graeme, she applied for the finance role with CancerCare to utilise her existing skills, develop knowledge of a new sector and become more involved in the community. She has started a part time degree course in Garden Design, and walks most weekends when not commuting to Bolton to watch the Wanderers. As a cancer survivor herself, Fiona is acutely aware of the value CancerCare brings to the local community.

Mary HollandMary Holland

Mary is a Specialist Palliative Care Nurse working in the community around the South Lakes area. She trained in General Nursing and Midwifery in Manchester and became a Ward Sister at St. Bartholomew’s in London. Developing an interest in Palliative Care Mary then specialised in Pain Relief at Addenbrooke’s Hospital Cambridge and undertook a degree in Palliative Care. In 1995 she moved with her family to Kendal in the Lake District.

Dr David Eaton

David Eaton

After graduating in Medicine at the University of Manchester in 1993 David trained in Medical Oncology at The Christie Hospital Manchester obtaining a PhD in 2002. In 2005 he was appointed as a Consultant Medical Oncologist at the University Hospitals Morecambe Bay NHS Trust specialising in the treatment of Breast, Colorectal and Renal Cancers. He is the current clinical lead for Oncology in Morecambe Bay. David lives locally in Brookhouse with his wife and three children.

Professor Gill BaynesGill Baynes

Gill was Professor of Medical Imaging Education at the University of Cumbria, before early retirement. She has written many papers and book chapters, presented and chaired events internationally. She is a Gold Medal holder and a National Teaching Fellow and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Gill lives in Lancaster and is now Chair and Speaker Co-ordinator of the Lancaster and Morecambe University of the Third Age.

Dr Karen Oliver

Karen Oliver

Dr Oliver previously worked as a GP in Kendal for 15 years and is currently a partner at King Street and University Medical Practice. She is also the MacMillan GP for North Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group, working on areas such as Early Cancer Diagnosis and Living with and Beyond Cancer.

Originally from Lancaster, Karen is married to another local GP and has two children. In her spare time she enjoys cycling, hockey, walking, and skiing.

Norah Mercer

Norah has lived in Lancaster for over 30 years, where their family flooring business is based. She has two grown up children and two granddaughters. Norah decided to take early retirement as Headteacher of Dean Gibson Catholic Primary School Kendal in August 2014. Prior to having children, Norah worked for The Department of Health and Social Security. With the family growing up, she decided on a career change and embarked on a five year journey to qualify as a teacher. Since retiring, she has been involved in various aspects of school improvement.

She says; “CancerCare provides an invaluable service within our local community. I regard it as an honour to be invited to join such an exceptional organisation.”

Peter Harrison

Peter Harrison

Born in Bolton, Peter moved to Lancaster in 2002 and lives in Ellel with his fiancé and young daughter.  He has been Managing Director at FGH Security since 2003, alongside eight years as a reservist Royal Marines Commando.  When not working,

Peter will often be found either reading, scaling a mountain or sat in a tent somewhere.  He holds a degree in Management Science and attained an MBA in 2016, both from Lancaster University.  He has a passion for people and business

 Kate Shawcross

Kate is an Associate Solicitor specialising in Employment & HR at Napthens, and is based at their Kendal office. Kate acts predominantly for businesses, advising them on all of their employment-related needs, from drawing up contracts of employment, through to handling tribunal claims and advising on TUPE transactions. Kate also frequently delivers training sessions to employers and HR advisers. Kate lives in Lancaster with her husband and young son, and in her spare time plays hockey for Lancaster & Morecambe Hockey Club.
