Two new in-person support groups for people who have been bereaved are launching in Barrow and Kendal this spring.
CancerCare are holding a therapist-led bereavement group for adults at their centres on Duke Street, Barrow and Blackhall Road, Kendal. The sessions will run for eight weeks and will be led by two experienced counsellors.
Last year, we successful trialled the first therapist-led bereavement group at our centre in Lancaster. The pilot study aided the development of a framework for the group to be rolled out into our Barrow and Kendal centres.
The group will provide participants with the opportunity to share their own stories while also hearing the experiences of other group members.
CancerCare’s Head of Therapy Services Rachel Walker said: “Grief can be a lonely road. Being part of a therapist-led group provides clients with a safe space to talk through their emotions while feeling cared for and respected. It allows for connection, too, and we hope that clients may form friendships which support them once their group has finished. We hope that this group will be suitable for those people who might not feel that one-to-one counselling is for them, or they might have benefitted from another form of therapy and feel ready for a group setting for further support while going through a bereavement.”
