We held a special event at The Winter Gardens in Morecambe on Sunday to celebrate and recognise the important contributions made by our dedicated team of volunteers this year.

Over 40 volunteers were welcomed to our royal themed afternoon tea party with live music provided by pianist and ex CancerCare client Vernon Chapman. Volunteer Recognition awards were also handed out to five special volunteers, as nominated by the CancerCare staff & therapist teams.

CancerCare CEO Neil Townsend said;

“It’s been a really lovely event today and a great way to end National Volunteer Week. The great work our volunteers provide is valued so much by all of us here and, quite simply, without them the charity could not function the way it does. They are an integral and vital part of CancerCare.”

CancerCare’s 150-strong volunteer team have contributed over 6,500 hours of their own time this year providing support to the organisation in a number of roles including Receptionists, Drivers and Support Group volunteers.

This year’s Recognition Award categories were based around CancerCare’s values with prizes handed out to winners including:

Volunteer Receptionist Dawn Clifford from Lancaster (Welcoming category)

Volunteer Receptionist Steven Gill from Lancaster (Professional category)

Volunteer Receptionist Sally Anne Mayne from Kendal (Expert category)

Volunteer Driver David Pickering from Lancaster (Trusted category)

Breast cancer survivor and Volunteer Sarah Drake (pictured below on the right) from Lancaster also won a ‘Unique Contribution’ award for her work in the role as a CancerCare Community Champion and said;

“I’m so happy to win the award! I love volunteering at CancerCare because I want to show other people that there is life beyond a cancer diagnosis. I want to help educate others who haven't had it and how they can help those of us who have.”

CancerCare Volunteer Coordinator Andrea Partridge said;

“We’ve had a wonderful time! It’s so important to us that all our amazing volunteers are officially recognised for their hard work, dedication and support this year. Further thank you’s must also go to Linda Cody & Evelyn Archer at the Winter Gardens for letting us use their fantastic venue free of charge, Lakeland who donated prizes for our Award winners, Printing Plus for our invites and Sun Flowers who provided refreshments.”
