Members from a local cancer support group held a ‘Phoenix from the Flames’ Spring Ball event at Morecambe’s Globe Arena last week, helping to raise £14,000 for CancerCare.

This special black tie fundraiser included a fizz reception and sumptuous three course dinner followed by dancing, live music and a fabulous auction with prizes under the hammer including a Manchester United football shirt signed by the current squad.

Amongst the 250 guests were several members of CancerCare’s Phoenix Cancer Group – an online group offering informal support to local cancer survivors and their loved ones.

Phoenix Group co-founder and Ball organiser Sarah Drake (pictured below, left) said: “The Ball was beyond all my expectations and the room was buzzing the entire night, as was the dance floor. The hope was for us to raise money but also awareness of this amazing charity.

CancerCare, to me, is an insurance policy – one you hope to never have to cash in – but thank god they are there if you ever do. I was 34 when I was diagnosed with cancer, my youngest son only 12 months old. It’s something you never expect to happen. I’m so grateful I walked up CancerCare’s driveway.

During my diagnosis and treatment, I felt pure fear and loneliness. The Phoenix support group helps make sure no one else has to feel that way.”IMG 2612 2

Breast Cancer survivor and Andrea Partridge who works for the charity as Volunteer & Engagement Officer said: “Cancer has given us lots of things – mostly quite difficult times, a lot of pain and heartache, but one thing it has also given us is CancerCare and our friendship, and I’m so grateful for that. The ball has been a fantastic occasion and a huge celebration of our group’s achievements.

“We’d also like to thank all the local businesses who have supported the event by donating the amazing prizes for our auction and to our very generous sponsors Printing Plus.”

Founded in 1983 by a local Oncologist, local charity CancerCare specialise in providing supportive, non-clinical care to cancer patients, their carers and families and those bereaved across North Lancashire, South Lakeland and in the Furness peninsular.

Helping over 1,500 local people every year, the CancerCare team is currently supported by 20 staff, 32 therapists and over 120 volunteers at two dedicated centres in Lancaster & Kendal.

It costs the charity £1million to provide their range of support services which include professional counselling, support groups and complementary therapies, raised almost entirely through fundraising and donations.
